SONS Olfactory Relays

Sequence of events using olfactory mucosal stimulation and cortical transmission relay of electrical impulses using SONS:

  • Electrical stimulation of the olfactory mucosa of the nose
  • Dendrites on the olfactory mucosa surface are stimulated
  • Electrical impulses from the olfactory mucosa nerve cells pass to the olfactory nerves (axons)
  • Impulses are transmitted to the olfactory nerve to the olfactory bulb
  • Impulses from the olfactory bulb are transmitted to the olfactory tract
  • The olfactory tract is connected to the entorhinal cortex, involved in memory and recall
  • Transmission from the entorhnal cortex to:
    • Prefrontal cortex
    • Hippocampus
    • Thalamus
    • Limbic system, and cortical radiation to cerebral cortex.
